Coronary artery bifurcation haemodynamics - comparison between phase contrast MRI and computational fluid dynamics

چکیده
Background Coronary atherosclerosis is common at vessel bifurcations. A quantitative approach to measuring blood velocity, vorticity and more complex flow features at bifurcations would enhance the understanding of the mechanisms of atheroma development, and potentially predict vessels at highest risk. The aim of this work was to validate 4D phase contrast (PC) magnetic resonance imaging flow measurements using a simplified arterial model of the left main coronary bifurcation against computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modelling.

Computational fluid dynamic simulations of image-based stented coronary bifurcation models.
One of the relevant phenomenon associated with in-stent restenosis in coronary arteries is an altered haemodynamics in the stented region. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) offers the possibility to investigate the haemodynamics at a level of detail not always accessible within experimental techniques. CFD can quantify and correlate the local haemodynamics structures which might lead to in-ste...
متن کاملA new method to quantify coronary flow conditions using dynamically scaled in vitro phase contrast magnetic resonance imaging
Background Atherosclerotic coronary artery disease remains a major cause of illness and death, and coronary flow predetermines disease. Limitations in imaging technology prevent coronary flow measurements but computational fluid dynamics (CFD) need sophisticated boundary conditions for accurate flow predictions. MRI has recently been combined with CFD for larger calibre vessels, but small coron...

متن کاملReconstruction of carotid bifurcation hemodynamics and wall thickness using computational fluid dynamics and MRI.
A thorough understanding of the relationship between local hemodynamics and plaque progression has been hindered by an inability to prospectively monitor these factors in vivo in humans. In this study a novel approach for noninvasively reconstructing artery wall thickness and local hemodynamics at the human carotid bifurcation is presented. Three-dimensional (3D) models of the lumen and wall bo...
متن کاملNew Methods for Computational Fluid Dynamics Modeling of Carotid Artery from Magnetic Resonance Angiography
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models of the carotid artery are constructed from contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) using a deformable model and a surface-merging algorithm. Physiologic flow conditions are obtained from cine phase-contrast MRA at two slice locations below and above the carotid bifurcation. The methodology was tested on image data from a rigid flow-throug...
